DUIs and Professional Licenses

How might a DUI conviction impact my career?

Most people know that being convicted for a DUI could result in suspension of your driver’s license, fines, and potentially prison time. What many people fail to realize, however, is that a DUI could have far reaching consequences, including the inability to obtain a professional license or loss of your existing professional license.  Being convicted of a DUI could in this manner continue to affect your life and finances for many years to come.  Any professional or potential future professional who is arrested for a DUI will need to vigorously defend against the DUI charge.

Professions That Could Be Affected by a DUI

Many professions require that you maintain a valid professional license.  Failure to obtain a license could prevent you from entering the field, while loss of your license due to a DUI could equate to the loss of your job.  Every professional licensing organization will treat a DUI differently.  The following professions require that members be of good moral judgment and character, which could mean that a DUI will make it difficult to hold a valid license:

  • Doctor
  • Nurse
  • Lawyer
  • CPA
  • Real estate agent
  • Insurance agent

Each professional licensing board in each state will have unique policies on how a DUI is treated. For example, the Georgia Medical Board has the power to suspend doctors who are convicted of a DUI.  The Board could require that the physician complete an alcohol or drug course. If you obtain a DUI before completing medical school, it can cause also problems.  You will be required to report all felonies to the Board when applying for admission.  While most first time DUIs are a misdemeanor, subsequent DUIs or those with aggravating factors will be considered a felony.

Even if your DUI will not result in the loss of your professional license, having to declare the incident will no doubt be unprofessional and cause you embarrassment.  Any professional or anyone who is considering pursing a professional license in the future will want to contact a DUI defense attorney immediately to start protecting their legal rights.  With the assistance of an experienced DUI lawyer, you may be able to avoid conviction and minimize the negative consequences of a DUI arrest.
